Separating is never easy especially when you know what will cost the most expensive divorce in history. Non-stop behind-the-scenes negotiations have led to a broad agreement by the UK to a gross financial settlement of £89bn on leaving the block, although the British expect the final net bill to be half as much. All the three Brexit divorce issues will be on the table: the Brexit bill, the Irish border and protecting EU citizens’ rights.

I cannot help but think on the irony of Brexit. British repeatedly complained about the economic burden of the EU, and now they do not only have to pay a hefty sum to end their relationship with the rest of Europe, but they will undoubtedly suffer economically for this decision.

I believe that they have a lot to reflect on their decision that has both political and economic repercussions but above all there seems to be a deep social division both in the UK and within the EU. The lessons will be interesting to analyze.
